The 90/10 Rule

What is the 90/10 rule?

We watched a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6402QJp52Mby Dr. Mike who suggested that the #1 way to be resilient and tolerate the stresses of life is to change your thinking.

How does the 90/10 rule follow this idea? Explain below in one or two paragraphs. Include examples from your life. Write your paragraph below in the comments so you can respond easily to other's ideas. Reply to at least 3 different classmates.

  1. Stressing makes life worse especially ,when it becomes chronic stress .sometimes we turn small problems into very big ,therefore, that affects our lives and our bodies like 90%/10% ,it means it happens 10% and we response 90% in this we should take it easy to be healthy and happy.

  3. 90/10 Rule
The stress is the millennium illness, because in the most families the parents work, they have concerns about the house, kids and work.

Sometimes is normal the people feel stress, in the life there are different situations that cause stress, but difference is in yourself, in your thought and how do you respond.

For example, I felt stress when my husband didn't have a job, but I prayed every day for our situation and I decided to help to my husband. First we organized our ideas, the place where we would live, in this place settle down, look for different work options.
Now my husband is working, he is happy with his job. :)

  7. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude, I am convinced that the life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our attitudes.

    1. I like that analogy: in life all we can do is play on one string - our attitude and our reaction is 90% of our life.

  8. Life is full of stresses, from birth to death. You should have be adaptable and flixable to figure out your stress. Sometimes we are strong and can fight stressful situations like acure stress (exam, meeting someone for the first time or moving to a new country...). You have to think positively and don't exaggerate the matters(responding). I believe that we should be more resilient and accept some stressful issues when we have no choice, otherwise stress will control your life. In other words, as long as you are alive, breathing and thinking, you are still stressed and under pressures.

  9. 90/10 Rules

By watching the video of Dr.Mike I learn that is very important to change your thinking and the way you look at the problems.

I agree to this 90/10 rule because most of the time the problem are small but the reaction is big .If we take couple of second to think then we will not respond aggressively . I know it's difficult even I struggle alot with this. But now I change the way I think I give my self some time or go outside for a walk and listen music and after a while the situation is under control.

    1. Sadaf Khan Usman,

Nice! Problems are small but our reaction can be big - too big. Music and walking can cool us down and give us perspective.

    2. I agree with the idea of seeing our problems in different way or changing our way of thinking will help a lot.

    1. Focus more on punctuation Sabiha,so that your sentences are more clearly written with a clear meaning. You also need to finish your ideas, such as the idea of your kids falling down and your reaction is very high - how would you do this differently if you agree with Dr. Mike?

  12. Stress can be triggered by a problem on the surface and appears to be impossible to solve. Learning how to find a solution to your problems will help you to have more control. How can we change stress throughout life? I think: it's important to change our way of thinking. How to be positive

  14. I agree praying God to help us, but in Holy book Quran Allah says he never help those whose not help themselves to change, the best is to self control, and be cool to solve the problem, or in other words act but do not react aggressively, be optimistic.

  15. What is this principle?
10% of life is made up of what happens to you. 90% of life is decided by how you react. What does this mean?

We really have no control over 10% of what happens to us. We cannot stop the car from breaking down. The plane will be late arriving, which throws our whole schedule off. A driver may cut us off in traffic. We have no control over this 10%.

The other 90% is different. You determine the other 90%. How? By your reaction. You cannot control a red light., but you can control your reaction. Don't let people fool you; YOU can control how you react.

Let's take an example. You are eating breakfast with your family. Your daughter knocks over a cup of coffee onto your business shirt. You have no control over what just what happened. What happens next will be determined by how you react. You curse. You harshly scold your daughter for knocking the cup over. She breaks down in tears. After scolding her, you turn to your spouse and criticize her for placing the cup too close to the edge of the table. A short verbal battle follows. You storm upstairs and change your shirt. Back downstairs, you find your daughter has been too busy crying to finish breakfast and get ready for school. She misses the bus. Your spouse must leave immediately for work. You rush to the car and drive your daughter to school. Because you are late, you drive 40 miles an hour in a 30 mph speed limit. After a 15-minute delay and throwing $60 traffic fine away, you arrive at school. Your daughter runs into the building without saying goodbye. After arriving at the office 20 minutes late, you find you forgot your briefcase. Your day has started terrible. As it continues, it seems to get worse and worse. You look forward to coming home, When you arrive home, you find small wedge in your relationship with your spouse and daughter.

So, conclusion is act but react, be cool happy life

  18. I went through the video of Dr. Mike Evens about the stress and 90/10 rules, about how stress affects people.
sometime the problem is not such a big, but we make it big and complicated, and out reaction is even greater.
Hence, we have to change our thinking style, by different techniques, as such if we are anger with someone at home, instead of giving rapid reaction, lets go out from home, take deep breath sit somewhere in Park, think what could be the best solution of the problem etc....
At last I can say what I said earlier We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude, I am convinced that the life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our attitudes.

  19. In my opinion stress is a broad spectrum subject that has to be treated based on the cause and the effect on individuals or groups of people back ground, culture attitude etc....

According to Dr.Mike, being resilient and tolerance are helpful to change our way of thinking towards our stressors.90-10 rule can be related by how we respond matters more than what happens on our life, It implies more about what matters is our way of thinking. I disagree with the ratio of the percentage though, I think it differs from person to person and how much that individual develops the characters to be more resilient and tolerant.

For example when I moved first from my home country Ethiopia, I was so stressed and I couldn't see the beauty of other country culture and so on, but changing way of thinking helped me to learn to see the beauty of diversity.

In general, I think good stress is i actually important in life, how ever chronic stress has to managed before it snapped us.

    In my
